Tra Gennaio 1958 e Aprile 1959, il famoso critico jazz inglese Stanley Dance produsse nove straordinari LP di jazz tradizionale per l'etichetta Felsted. Tra gli interpreti ci furono molti jazzisti superbi che stavano vivendo un periodo di relativa oscurità o che raramente avevano registrato come leader. Questo box da 5 CD raccoglie, per la prima volta, tutti i nove album pubblicati dalla Felsted nella loro forma completa. Metà di questi album non sono mai apparsi su CD, mentre altri sono da tempo introvabili. I leader dei nove album sono il clarinettista Buster Bailey, il trombonista Dicky Wells (due LP), i sassofonisti Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Tate e Budd Johnson, i pianisti Earl Hines e Billy Strayhorn, e il batterista Cozy Cole. Stanley Dance è nato il 15 Settembre 1910 a Braintree, Essex, in Inghilterra, ed è stato uno dei più importanti scrittori e divulgatori del jazz in paritolare della Swing Era. Nel 1950 ha coniato il termine "mainstream" descrivendolo così: "Jazz Mainstream...In primo luogo, si tratta di un termine di riferimento per un vasto corpo di jazz che ha corso il pericolo di perdere la sua identità. In pratica, viene applicata al linguaggio jazzistico che si è sviluppato tra il periodo di massimo splendore di King Oliver e Jelly Roll Morton da un lato e quello di Charlie Parker e Dizzy Gillespie dall'altro. Il termine è nato durante il periodo in cui il jazz sembrava essere completamente diviso tra tradizionale (Dixieland, New Orleans, Two-Beat) e moderno (Bop, Cool, Progressive). Tra coloro che sono rimasti fuori da questa divisione c’ erano musicisti come Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins e Buck Clayton. Poiché tutto il buon jazz, di qualsiasi tipo ed epoca, è in teoria swingante, 'Swing' non era certo sufficiente per etichettarli. Da qui il termine "mainstream" per indicare una musica non inibita da qualsiasi combinazione strumentale particolare, ma che sottolinea le virtù comuni di espressione emotiva e swing. Sì, lo swing, senza il quale il jazz non significa niente".
