L’hokum è uno stile, o meglio un particolare tipo di canzone, che agli albori del blues ne ha messo in luce un aspetto completamente diverso da quello a cui siamo abituati: divertente, scanzonato, spigliato e leggero. Con il suo uso di insinuazioni, doppi sensi e giochi di parole, questo stile divenne estremamente popolare tra la fine degli anni Venti e l’inizio degli anni Trenta, e la sua influenza è rimasta parte integrante del blues da allora.
