"Portrait In Jazz" è stato il terzo album di Bill Evan come leader, dopo "New Jazz Conceptions" (1956) e "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" (1958). È stato anche il primo LP di Evans con il talentuoso bassista Scott LaFaro. La straordinaria chimica dei due musicisti è evidente sin dal primo brano.
