"Portrait in Jazz", registrato il 28 dicembre 1959, è il terzo album di Bill Evans come leader e anche il primo LP di Evans con il talentuoso bassista Scott LaFaro. Il trio Evans-LaFaro-Motian registrerà un secondo album in studio, "Explorations", il 2 febbraio 1961, ma raggiungerà l'apice con le registrazioni del 25 giugno 1961 al Village Vanguard di New York. LaFaro morirà in un incidente d'auto poco dopo (il 6 luglio 1961), all'età di 25 anni. Una selezione di brani della sessione del Village Vanguard è stata realizzata dallo stesso Evans e originariamente presentata in due album: "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" e quello qui presentato, "Waltz for Debby".
