La formazione protagonista di questa registrazione rappresenta la terza incarnazione di Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers (la prima formazione stabile, nata nel 1954, comprendeva Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver e Doug Watkins, mentre la seconda, del 1957, includeva Bill Hardman, Johnny Griffin o Jackie McLean, Sam Dockery e Spanky Debrest). Il gruppo in questa occasione è formato infatti dal trombettista Lee Morgan, dal sassofonista tenore Wayne Shorter, dal pianista Bobby Timmons e dal contrabbassista Jymie Merritt, a cui si aggiunge il trombonista Curtis Fuller. Registrato nel 1961, questo album è uno dei lavori più rappresentativi di questa formazione.
