“Birth of the cool” vede il leggendario Miles Davis a capo di un gruppo eccezionale composto tra gli altri da: J.J. Johnson, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz e John Lewis. Registrato alla fine degli anni Quaranta, questo album rappresenta una delle pietre miliari della discografia di Miles Davis. Oggi la musica del Miles Davis Nonet e di questo album in particolare è molto apprezzata, ma non fu così all’epoca della pubblicazione di questo LP. L’album lasciò infatti il pubblico abbastanza indifferente, ma diventò fonte di ispirazione per molti musicisti.
