COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES

Nel 1959 Coltrane aveva registrato numerose sessioni come sideman per Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Burrell, e Tadd Dameron, e molti altri. Aveva anche registrato diversi album in quartetto, alcuni dei quali erano stati pubblicati sotto il nome del pianista Red Garland, mentre altri erano stati pubblicati sotto il nome di Coltrane. Poi venne “Giant Steps”, album con cui Coltrane si impose sulla scena jazz. In quel disco, per la prima volta, tutti i brani erano i suoi e il suo stile personale sembrava ormai pienamente sviluppato. Successivamente Coltrane avrebbe registrato gli album “Coltrane Jazz”, “The Avant Garde” (con Don Cherry), “Coltrane’s Sound”, “My Favorite Things” e infine l’album qui riproposto: “Coltrane Plays The Blues”. Come suggerisce il titolo, si tratta di un album tematico che consiste in sei tracce blues interpretate dal quartetto di Coltrane con McCoy Tyner (che in realtà non suona su “Blues to Bechet” e sulle due versioni di “Blues to You”), Steve Davis al basso e Elvin Jones alla batteria. "Blues for Bechet", uno dei due pezzi di questo album in cui Trane suona il sax soprano, è dedicato ad uno dei più grandi interpreti di questo strumento nel jazz: Sidney Bechet. Coltrane si cimentò altre volte nel blues nei suoi lavori successivi. Alcune registrazioni blues realizzate per l’etichetta Atlantic tra il 1959 e il 1960 sono state aggiunte come bonus
