Chet Baker è noto per il suo stile estremamente lirico e introspettivo (sia come cantante che come trombettista) e il suo stile è diventato un simbolo del West Coast jazz, ma non può essere dimenticato il contributo dato alla sua formazione dal jazz della East Coast. Baker fu infatti fortemente influenzato anche dai musicisti di New York. Ha incluso diversi brani di Miles Davis nel suo repertorio e ha sempre dichiarato che Miles è stato "il suo trombettista preferito". Baker era anche stato scelto dal grande Charlie Parker per unirsi alla sua band per la sua tournèe in California nel 1952. Un mese prima della registrazione di questo album, Chet Baker aveva registrato Baker Sings: It Could Happen to You, anch’esso registrato a New York con musicisti della Grande Mela. L’album qui proposto, “Chet Baker In New York” (Riverside RLP12-299) vede il trombettista accompagnato da alcuni dei più importanti musicisti attivi a New York, con Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones. Queste tracce rappresentano le uniche registrazioni di Baker e Griffin insieme. Come bonus è stata aggiunta una delle due sessioni dell'album Chet Baker Plays The Best of Lerner e Loewe.
