"Chet Baker in New York" vede Chet Baker suonare con grandi musicisti della East Coast: Philly Joe Jones alla batteria, Al Haig al piano, il grande Paul Chambers al basso e il sassofonista tenore Johnny Griffin aggiunto su tre tracce. Registrato nel dicembre 1958, Baker non ha cantato in nessuna delle canzoni dell'LP. "Soft Winds" è stato registrato durante la stessa sessione del resto dei brani, ma inizialmente non è stato incluso nell'LP "Chet Baker in New York", poiché originariamente doveva essere pubblicato su una compilation da vari trombettisti (New Blue Horns). È stato aggiunto qui per completare la sessione originale.
