Questa pubblicazione propone l’album originale del 1959 Oscar Peterson Plays the Jimmy McHugh Songbook (Verve MG VS6092), per la prima volta su CD. L’album vede Peterson accompagnato da Ray Brown al contrabbasso e Ed Thigpen alla batteria. Per questa edizione speciale sono state aggiunte come bonus altre registrazioni di composizioni di Jimmy McHugh realizzate da Peterson tra il 1953 e il 1954. Tra queste anche gli EP in tre volumi di Oscar Peterson Plays Jimmy McHugh (Clef EPC 346/48) che vedono il pianista accompagnato da Ray Brown e Barney Kessel o Herb Ellis alla chitarra. Le registrazioni del 1959 proposte in questo album sono tratte da una serie di intense sessioni durante le quali Peterson e la sua band registrono i songbook di alcuni dei più rinomati compositori americani. Nel 1959, Peterson registrò infatti i suoi tributi a Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, Warren Harry & Vincent Youmans e Duke Ellington.
