L’hokum è uno stile, o meglio un particolare tipo di canzone, che agli albori del blues ne ha messo in luce un aspetto completamente diverso da quello a cui siamo abituati: divertente, scanzonato, spigliato e leggero. Con il suo uso di insinuazioni, doppi sensi e giochi di parole, questo stile divenne estremamente popolare tra la fine degli anni Venti e l’inizio degli anni Trenta, e la sua influenza è rimasta parte integrante del blues da allora. Questo volume della collana Rough Guide raccoglie registrazioni classiche realizzate nel periodo di massimo successo dell’hokum. Tra gli artisti presenti in questa raccolta ci sono leggendari bluesmen come Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Willie McTell e Charley Patton.
